Sen Soshitsu Zabosai becomes 16th Grand Master of Urasenke schoolAt the press conference held on 8 October, 2002, in the building Chado Kaikan in Kyoto, the Grand Master Sen Soshitsu XV Hounsai announced that his eldest son - Zabosai Sen Soshi - would be appointed the new, and since the times of Rikyu the sixteenth in succession, Grand Master of Urasenke school. Therefore, he would also become the head of Konnichian, the historical family home, and will take over the name Sen Soshitsu XVI, Zabosai. In connection with this act Sen Soshitsu XV Hounsai would accept the name Hounsai Genshitsu (Zen Grand Master). The appointment of the new head of the dynasty, the sixteenth successor of the Way of Tea tradition - Zabosai Soshitsu, was held on 22 December, 2002, in Konnichian. The oath was sworn in Rikyu Onsodo, a room dedicated to the founder of the Way of Tea - Sen no Rikyu. The ceremony began in the morning when Zabosai served tea in front of the family altar and then offered in front of Rikyu's statue. At the ceremony there were present: Hounsai Genshitsu (the previous Grand Master Sen Soshitsu XV), Sen Masako (Zabosai's wife) with children, Izumi Soko (Zabosai's brother) with his wife, Sen Sosa (Grand Master of Omotesenke school) and Sen Soshu (Grand Master of Mushanokojisenke school). The other family members and Tea Masters were seated in Totsutotsusai (room built by the eleventh Grand Master of Urasenke school - Gengensai). The superior of the family temple - Daitokuji Jukoin ushered Zabosai in the room where, in front of Rikyu's statue, Zabosai swore the oath that he would do everything so that the tradition would continue and thrive. Then the present drank the tea that Grand Master Zabosai served for them in Totsutotsusai. | |
